International Resources Guide to Hazardous Chemicals
Published in Hardcover by Noyes Publications (November, 2002)
Authors: Stanley A. Greene and Greene
Average review score:

From E-Streams - May 2003
This book is the companion to Sittig's Handbook of Toxic and Hazardous Chemicals and Carcinogens, 4th edition. Hazardous chemicals listed in Sittig are the basis of this book. "This book is intended for chemists, toxicologists, laboratory technicians, manufacturers, safety professionals and government personnel involved in environmental and industrial safety and health matters."

The resource is divided into eight sections. Section 1 is the largest section and takes up half the book. You will find an alphabetical list of hazardous chemicals and their manufacturers names. It also lists the country of the manufacturer if not made in the U.S.

Section 2 (International Directory of Manufacturers of Hazardous Chemicals) is an alphabetical list by country of chemical names and their manufacturer. Each entry includes address, phone, fax, email, and website. It may also include parent company, subsidiaries/affiliates and stock listing.

Sections 3 (International Chemical Industry Organizations), Section 4 (Professional Environmental Health and Industrial Hygiene Organizations) and Section 5 (International Environmental Protection Agencies) are all organized alphabetically by country and list organization or agency name, address, phone, fax, email, and website. Some entries include a brief description of the organization. Only federal agencies are listed for the United Statesin Section 5.

Section 6 (State Environmental, Health and Occupational Safety Agencies) is organized by state or U.S. territory and includes agency name, address, phone, fax, email, and website.

Section 7 lists Hotlines, Databases, and Useful Web Sites. The hotlines appear to be U.S.and Canadian only. Hotline or database name, responsible organization, hotline number, email, website and organization descriptions are listed. Useful websites include those from .com, .edu, .org, and .gov websites. Many of the listed hotlines from federal agencies. Many database listings include contact phone numbers, which is a great feature.

Section 8 (Poison Control Centers) is organized by state and lists organization name, address, emergency phone number or hotline, and the area served. The book also includes an index.

This is an excellent resource. It is very easy to use and includes quality sources. It will serve as a nice jumping point for further research. This reviewer gives International Resources Guide to Hazardous Chemicals: Manufacturers, Agencies, Organizations, and Sources of Information an enthusiastic recommendation to all libraries concerned with environmental and chemical safety issues.

Introduction to the Study of Experimental Medicine
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 1957)
Authors: Claude Bernard, L. J. Henderson, and Henry C. Greene
Average review score:

The wonderful world of homeostasis
As Bernard puts it: "I think I was the first to urge the belief that animals have really two environments: a milieu extérieur in which the organism is situated, and a milieu intérieur in which the tissue elements live. The living organism does not really exist in the milieu extérieur (the atmosphere it breathes, salt or fresh water if that is the element) but in the liquid milieu intérieur formed by the circulating organic liquid which surrounds and bathes all the tissue elements; this is the lymph or plasma, the liquid part of the blood which, in the higher animals, is diffused through the tissues and forms the ensemble of the intercellular liquids and is the basis of all local nutrition and the common factor of all elementary exchanges. A complex organism should be looked upon as an assemblage of simple organisms which are the anatomical elements that live in the liquid milieu intérieur."

This book is a wonderful book for the biology student or for anyone interested in how medicinal studies and biology "began." Claude Bernard introduces his idea of homeostasis in this book and he explains how and why it works, and how humans, as well as animals, could not live without such an idea.

I recommend reading of this book. It kept me busy for hours and I didn't want to put it down. Five stars for excellence, intelligence, and much much more. Read it for yourself and you be the jugde!

Justice at Dachau: The Trials of an American Prosecutor
Published in Hardcover by Broadway Books (08 April, 2003)
Author: Joshua Greene
Average review score:

Wonderful, much needed book on The Holocaust
This is a book well worth reading for anyone interested in WW2, The trials that took place after the war, The Holocaust and the basis of criminal law itself.

This is a compelling story of one decent, civilized man; a lawyer, Colonel William Denson, who found himself in an almost impossible position: As lead prosecutor in the trials of the Nazi criminals at Dachau, Mauthausen and other camps--how was he to handle and balance the common, accepted practices of law and jurisprudence when faced with the almost incomprehensible crimes of the Holocaust.

The book is about Denson's personal struggle with these trials and about the trials themselves. Also, of course, about the details of the camps and the perpatrators and the victims.
These trials, along with the larger, more famous Nuremberg trials, helped establish the foundations for all the international criminal tribunals that have followed.
The book examines the political winds that blew behind the scenes of the trials and how that affected the charges brought and the final outcomes of the trials (including sentencing).

If you are interested in how humanity evolves, especially in the area of international law and punishing international criminals, I advise you to read this book.

Lakota Recollections of the Custer Fight: New Sources of Indian-Military History
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (March, 1997)
Authors: Richard G. Hardorff and Jerome A. Greene
Average review score:

Inciteful & Passionate Recount of a Very Misunderstood Event
Richard "Dutch" Hardorff is one of the most thorough and objective students of General Custer's "last stand". His love of the truth and respect for the Indian tribes and their homeland is inspiring. His writing is captivating and fresh, especially considering the extensive treatment of the subject. Mr. Hardorff provides a lively and thought-provoking perspective that one would never get from the 'history' books. Truly an exceptional book and consistent with his fine other writings.

The Language of the Constitution: A Sourcebook and Guide to the Ideas, Terms, and Vocabulary Used by the Framers of the United States Constitution
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (30 November, 1991)
Authors: Thurston Greene, Stuart B. Flexner, Douglas M. Arnold, Christopher Collier, and Dominick Egan
Average review score:

An essential guide for constitutional scholars
"Language" can not adequately convey the importance/value of this book to those who seek to understand the "original meaning" of the United States Constitution. When I purchased this book, I was concerned that, upon close examination, I would discover that its purpose was to justify much of the Supreme Court's illegitimate jurisprudence over the past 100 years by misrepresenting (i.e. taking out of context) various historical documents. I quickly learned that this was indeed NOT the case. The Editor-in-Chief, Thurston Greene sums up the content of the book quite nicely in his preface, "It is strictly factual. There is no commentary, no speculation, no theorizing, no argumentation. Not a word that was written after the constitutional cake was baked . . . This book is a tool for the curious, for all those who realize how much more there is to know . . . ." Well said sir, well said.
